Prep your property
Reduce the chances that wind-borne debris and flooding could affect your home by taking the following steps.
- Trim trees and other greenery, especially branches that hang close to your home
- Clean out gutters and check for leaks
- Ensure all lawn furniture can be relocated indoors in the event of a storm
Make your plans
Make several emergency response plans and ensure all members of your household knows the plans in their entirety. If possible, share these plans with a trusted person outside of the storm’s path so that they can keep track of your possible whereabouts and know how to check in after the storm passes.
- Make an evacuation plan, whether you are in a mandatory or voluntary evacuation zone
- Plan what to do if you stay on your property
Stock your kits
During a storm and its aftermath, it is often very difficult to access stores for supplies and emergency services maybe delayed and overwhelmed. Additionally, when a storm is announced, stores begin to lose supplies very quickly and often sell out of important items days before a storm’s arrival. Combat this issue by beginning to accumulate your supplies early.
- Emergency food and water (non-perishable)
- Be sure to regularly check your stores and cycle out food before it expires
- First Aid Kits
- Evacuation Kit
Beginning preparations early can help your family and property stay safe and help alleviate stress once a storm starts to approach.
