The property previously had accordion shutters installed over non-impact windows. Although this could provide protection when deployed in advance of a storm, if not properly maintained they can become cumbersome to operate and their certification can expire. Also, they must remain open when the building is occupied so it does not serve as 24/7 protection like impact resistant glass does.
A major aspect of this project was to use products that would create an open feel that allowed more natural light. This was achieved not only by using windows and doors with thinner frames, but by also adding new windows where there previously were none. This helped to open the interior office space. A prime example of this change was the back area where a solid rolling garage style door was replaced with French doors and multiple sidelights.
Aluminum framed bronze windows and doors were used to modernize the look of the building. Dark framed openings coupled with a light wall color creates a nice contrast that is often utilized in contemporary design. In addition, louvered windows at the top of the front openings were replaced with one large window. Louvers are a very traditional window style that tend to jam and are typically inefficient.
