As hurricane season begins today, June 1st, we are scrutinizing leading predictions for the levels of activity for the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Predictions are calling for an above average season, very similar to the prediction for 2019. As of today, there have already been two named pre-season storms; Tropical Storm Arthur and Tropical Storm Bertha.

In late March, the Atlantic Ocean had already reached sea surface temperatures of 80 degrees Fahrenheit. While these temperatures are not predicted to directly impact the number of storms, these temperatures often affect the intensity of storms. Average numbers for the Atlantic Hurricane Season is 12-6-3 (12 tropical storms, 6 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes).

As of now, below are the predictions from AccuWeather for the 2020 season:

Along with intensity and number of storms, there is another prediction that helps those of us in hurricane prone areas. Dale Link is known for his predictions about landfall zones for both Pacific Typhoon and Atlantic Hurricane seasons. In this year’s prediction, all South East Florida is included in landfall zone 4.

While these prediction sources historically have high rates of accuracy, the only guarantee with hurricanes is unpredictability. Homeowners and business owners in hurricane-prone areas should be prepared every year for a hurricane.
